This is a really cool place. One of my favorite in the Sierra. Been there twice with my Geezer friends. Those 2 peaks in the background are actually on the other side of a huge deep canyon that separates this bench from them. The canyon runs left to right, and thru the canyon runs the John Muir Trail. Some kid in his 20's approached Michael and I here on the bench while we were sitting with our backs against the rock settling in for happy hour and asked if this was Evolution Lake which is 1000 feet below in the canyon. I couldn't believe he was so off track. "Where did you go wrong?" I said in amazement. No map. No compass. And way out of his way. Thought he was taking a shortcut. His wife had just left him and then his hiking buddy left him mid-way on his hike. He had blisters and we helped him patch his feet before we sent him in the right direction toward Mt. Whitney, wishing we could do more, knowing we couldn't. The wounds we could see were nothing compared to the hurt and lonliness I sensed inside. He was lost in so many ways.
